Description

The University of Vaasa invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term Doctoral Researcher position in Circular Business Models for the Furniture Industry, as part of the EU-funded FRANCESCA project (Horizon Europe). This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about advancing circular economy practices and sustainable business models within the European furniture sector. The position is based in the School of Marketing and Communication, specifically within the Marketing and Consumption research group, and is located in Vaasa, Finland. The FRANCESCA project supports the transition of the furniture industry toward circularity, pioneering solutions across the entire product life cycle—from design and material selection to maintenance, reuse, and recycling. The University of Vaasa leads the development of circular business model tools, ecosystem management guidance, and the integration of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) into value creation architectures. The project features practical demonstrators, sustainability assessments, and policy recommendations at the EU level. As a Doctoral Researcher, you will conduct independent and collaborative research on circular business models, industrial ecosystems, and digital enablers such as DPPs. You will contribute to developing frameworks and guidelines that facilitate the circular transition, collaborate with a diverse consortium of universities, research organizations, manufacturers, retailers, and civil society groups, and participate in data collection, analysis, and validation with industry partners. The role includes leading and co-authoring scientific publications, supporting teaching or supervision tasks, presenting at conferences, and producing a doctoral dissertation based on your research within the project. The position offers a fully funded 2-year contract, with a salary based on the Finnish University Salary System (YPJ), demand level 2 (approx. 2418-2714 euros/month depending on experience and skills). Additional benefits include occupational health care, fitness and cultural benefits, flexible working arrangements, and access to a vibrant, international university community. The University of Vaasa provides extensive support for professional development and well-being. Eligibility requires a Master’s degree in a relevant field (business studies, marketing, management, sustainability, industrial engineering, innovation studies, or related), strong interest in circular economy and sustainable business models, excellent English communication skills, and motivation for doctoral studies. Experience in circular economy, sustainability transitions, digitalisation, qualitative or mixed methods research, and industry collaboration is desirable. Applicants not already enrolled as doctoral students must commit to applying for doctoral study rights during spring 2026. Applications must be submitted via the University of Vaasa’s online system by January 15, 2026. Required documents include a cover letter, CV (template required), Master’s transcript and certificate, a writing sample, and referee contact information. For further details, contact Professor Hannu Makkonen ([email protected]).
