About this position

Doctoral Researcher (PhD) in Electrochemical Deposition for The Martian Mindset at the University of Bremen, Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM), in the research group of Prof. Katharina Brinkert.

This newly funded Cluster of Excellence, The Martian Mindset – A scarcity-driven engineering paradigm, focuses on rethinking materials and component production under extreme resource constraints. The advertised PhD project sits in Research Area 2: Processing and is centered on electrochemistry, electrodeposition, materials science, and surface engineering. The work involves developing protocols for depositing Fe, Co, and Ni in an inert atmosphere on various substrates, tailoring surface morphology and magnetic properties, and characterizing the resulting thin films with AFM, SEM, TEM, and XPS.

A distinctive feature of the project is experimentation in reduced gravity using the Bremen Drop Tower at ZARM, where the effect of microgravity-like conditions on electrodeposition will be studied. The position also includes publishing and presenting research, collaborating with PhD students, postdocs, and industry partners, participating in retreats/seminars/workshops, and contributing to grant proposals. Teaching duties may be possible by agreement.

The position is 75% TV-L E13, limited until 30 June 2029, and starts as soon as possible, no earlier than 1 November 2026. The post is based in Bremen, Germany. The university offers mentoring and qualification support, international collaboration opportunities, and standard public-sector benefits.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a closely related field (final-stage master’s students may apply, but the degree certificate is required before employment); English proficiency at about CEFR B2; strong independence, teamwork, communication, analytical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

How to apply: submit one PDF by email to [email protected] with reference A127-26 by 12 August 2026. Include a motivation letter, a short thesis/research summary, CV, degree certificate/transcript, and any relevant supporting documents. Applications in English are requested; postal applications require prior email contact.
