The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a Doctoral researcher in Engineering Science, focusing on the non-destructive assessment of structural steel products for reuse in a circular economy. This position is based within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM), renowned for its multidisciplinary expertise and international research environment. The research project is conducted under the ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction, in collaboration with ArcelorMittal. The core objective is to assess mechanical properties of structural steel products using both destructive and non-destructive test methods, enabling their reuse in new construction projects. The project integrates laboratory-based experimental work with machine learning techniques to develop predictive models for steel properties, enhancing the feasibility of on-site non-destructive measurements.
Applicants should possess a Diploma or Master's degree in Metallurgical engineering, Materials science, Civil Structural Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Essential skills include a strong understanding of steel properties and manufacturing processes, proficiency in metallurgical test methods (metallography, chemical composition analysis, hardness testing, tensile and Charpy impact testing), and familiarity with magnetic properties and electromagnetic test methods (magnetic Barkhausen noise, Eddy-current). Experience with machine learning is highly desirable. Candidates must be willing to engage in intensive laboratory work (over 50% of the time) and enroll as a PhD student at the University of Luxembourg. Language proficiency at B2 level in the thesis language is required.
