About this position

Doctoral researcher opportunity at Aalto University in the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, Finland.

The project focuses on structural fire engineering of cold-formed steel roof decking systems with perforations. The doctoral research will study the structural behaviour of perforated steel roof deck systems under different fire scenarios, using furnace fire tests, numerical simulations, and analyses of full-scale perforated steel deck systems. Expected outcomes include modelling methods and design principles for perforated steel roof systems.

The role is part of a larger EU research project and involves collaboration with university researchers, academics, and industrial partners from different EU countries. The primary workplace is the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University, with regular on-site presence required.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in structural engineering or mechanical engineering. Essential skills include knowledge of fire resistance analysis and design for cold-formed steel structures, non-linear finite element analysis using Abaqus, CAD drawing skills, strong academic writing, and fluent English. Experience with fire simulations and experimental testing is an advantage; Finnish is also an advantage.

The position is funded for 3.5 years, with an initial 2-year contract and a midterm review in year two. The preferred start date is September 2026. Applications close on 17 August 2026.

Apply via Aalto’s recruitment portal and include a motivation letter, CV, thesis summary, degree certificate and transcript, and referee contacts. Email applications are not accepted. Candidates must have legal authorization to work in Finland and must complete the master’s degree before the PhD contract begins.
