About this position
The University of Eastern Finland is offering a four-year Doctoral Researcher position within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND Doctoral Programme for Advancing Forest-Based Bioeconomy (DP-FOBI). Based at the Joensuu campus, this PhD opportunity focuses on the dynamics of dead wood in Fennoscandian boreal forests, a critical structure for biodiversity and carbon retention. The research will utilize National Forest Inventory data from Finland, Norway, and Sweden to quantify how tree and environmental characteristics influence the progression of dead wood through decomposition stages. The project can be tailored to candidate interests, including a focus on old-growth forests and their diverse dead wood habitats.
DP-FOBI offers a supportive, interdisciplinary research environment, comprehensive doctoral training, and access to workshops, summer schools, research visits, and secondments. The Forest Disturbance Ecology research group and the broader FOBI community provide vibrant collaboration opportunities, including industry and societal partners. UEF staff benefits include extensive occupational health care, staff training, campus restaurant discounts, access to the national healthcare system, and affordable childcare and school services.
The position is full-time for four years, with a total working time of 1,612 hours per year and a four-month probationary period. The salary follows the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions system: living allowance (EUR 3,200/month), mobility allowance (EUR 87/month), family allowance (EUR 300/month for eligible researchers), paid leave, holiday bonus, travel allowance (EUR 1,500/year), additional travel allowance (EUR 10,500 total), research costs (EUR 6,000 total), and special needs allowance/support if required.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in forest ecology, ecology, environmental science, or a closely related field, and must not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application. The MSCA mobility rule applies (less than 12 months in Finland during the past 3 years). Candidates must meet the language requirements of the UEF Doctoral Programme in Science, Forestry and Technology. Strong understanding of forest ecosystem processes, quantitative skills, and experience in statistical modelling and data analysis using R or similar environments are required. Experience with Bayesian approaches, hierarchical models, and large spatial datasets is advantageous. Proof of English proficiency is required if not evident from academic credentials.
To apply, submit all materials in English via the UEF electronic recruitment system by 10 August 2026. Required documents include a certified copy of Master’s degree diploma and transcript, CV, electronic copy and summary of Master’s thesis, Ethics Self-Assessment form, motivational letter, and proof of English proficiency. Application templates are available on the DP-FOBI website. Applications not adhering to format or language requirements will not be considered. The selection process includes eligibility and ethics check, external review, interviews, final selection, and appointment. For questions, contact Project Manager Paula Inkeroinen or [email protected].
The University of Eastern Finland is a multidisciplinary institution with campuses in Joensuu and Kuopio, employing approximately 3,200 staff and hosting around 17,000 degree students. The Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology is internationally recognized for research and education in natural sciences, forestry, and technology.
