About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, offers a PhD position for a Doctoral Researcher in Vision-Language-Action Models. The position is based at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), renowned for its research in secure, reliable, and trustworthy ICT systems and services. The successful candidate will join the Computer Vision, Imaging, and Machine Intelligence (CVI²) research group, led by Professor Djamila Aouada, and collaborate closely with POST Luxembourg, the country’s leading postal, telecommunications, and ICT operator.

This research opportunity focuses on multimodal reasoning and Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models for autonomous driving. The aim is to enhance the safety, generalization, and efficiency of VLA-based driving systems, improving their robustness to rare and novel scenarios, their capacity for long-horizon reasoning, and their efficient inference for real-world deployment. The candidate will conduct research on predefined topics that contribute to both SnT’s and POST’s R&D activities, including reviewing state-of-the-art methods, implementing and validating solutions, and disseminating results through scientific publications and patents.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related field. A strong background in image and signal processing, particularly computer vision, is required, along with programming skills in Python, C, C++, or MATLAB. Familiarity with machine learning and deep learning concepts is essential, and experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch is expected. Additional experience with multimodal learning, vision-language models, large language models, or autonomous driving perception and planning is a strong asset. Candidates must demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, dynamic, and inclusive research environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. The position is a fixed-term contract for 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week), based at the Kirchberg Campus. The yearly gross salary for doctoral researchers is EUR 43445.

To apply, candidates should submit their application online through the HR system, including a CV, cover letter, transcript, research statement, and preferably a GitHub/GitLab webpage listing completed projects. Early application is highly encouraged, as applications are processed upon reception. Applications by email will not be considered. The University promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
