About this position

The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (Leibniz-HKI) is offering a Doctoral Researcher Position in Metagenomics within the Microbiome Dynamics department. This four-year PhD position focuses on computational microbiome research, aiming to develop personalized strategies for disease detection, monitoring, treatment, and prevention. The department is actively involved in several EU- and BMBF-funded consortia, including MiCCrobioTAckle, PerMiCCion, FOODGUARD, NUTRIMMUNE, the Cluster of Excellence 'Balance of the Microverse', and SynThera.

The PhD project will be tailored to the candidate’s skills and interests, aligning with the objectives of these consortia. A central aspect of the research involves computational integration of multi-omics datasets from microbial communities and the host, with the goal of uncovering the systemic impact of gut bacteria on human physiology. The research will explore the interface between the gut microbiome, diet, and the immune system, investigating the role of gut bacteria in diseases such as cancer, metabolic disorders, aging, and infections.

Successful candidates will join an international, interdisciplinary team led by Prof. Dr. Gianni Panagiotou, working in a dynamic environment with access to state-of-the-art computational resources. The group consists of 15–20 members at various levels of seniority and fosters academic excellence in a collegial and inclusive setting. The position offers a salary according to the German TV-L agreement for public service employees.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. Required skills include experience in metagenomics, untargeted metabolomics, or other high-throughput biological datasets, knowledge of statistical methods in biological systems, and programming proficiency (Python, Perl, C++, R). Collaborative skills and a strong interest in interdisciplinary research are essential.

Leibniz-HKI is committed to equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups. Applications should be submitted in English via the Leibniz-HKI online application system and must include a cover letter, CV with publication list, statement of research experiences, certificate of study/transcript, and addresses of two referees. The deadline for applications is April 30, 2026, with rolling review.
