About this position
The University of Vaasa is offering a fully funded Doctoral Researcher position in Strategic Business Development within the H2NEXUS project. The role is based in the School of Management in Vaasa, Finland, and is aligned with the Research Council of Finland-funded project duration of three years. The preferred start date is September 2026, or as agreed.
The project examines the co-evolution of markets and energy ecosystems, focusing on the emergence of the hydrogen economy in Finland. It combines techno-economic modelling with market-shaping theory to study how markets are designed, evolve, and stabilize over time. Research themes include institutional work, market practices, business model innovation, pricing mechanisms, ecosystem governance, and the transition from early-stage to more institutionalized market phases. The work also considers the impact of hydrogen markets and regulations on the broader energy system and on business cases in hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, fertilizers, shipping fuels, and aviation fuels.
The doctoral researcher will contribute to project activities, conduct independent and collaborative research, participate in interviews, workshops, case studies, data analysis, and validation with stakeholders, and help produce high-quality academic publications and a doctoral dissertation. The role also includes conference presentations, project meetings, and possible support for teaching or supervision tasks according to university guidelines. The working environment is interdisciplinary and international, involving collaboration with universities, research organisations, manufacturers, retailers, civil society organisations, industry stakeholders, and policy makers.
Applicants should hold a suitable master’s degree in a relevant business field such as management, industrial management, B2B management, or a closely related area. The University of Vaasa expects strong interest in the research topic, the ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team, excellent English communication skills, and motivation to produce high-quality research outputs. Experience with qualitative or mixed methods research, engagement with industry stakeholders, and prior exposure to energy or hydrogen topics are considered desirable.
The position is fully funded and the salary follows the Finnish University Salary System (YPJ), at demand levels 2–4, approximately EUR 2,521–3,143 per month depending on experience and skills. The selected applicant will be accepted into the University of Vaasa’s Doctoral Programme and pursue a doctoral degree in Management through a separate application process. The position is fixed-term and full-time, with a probationary period.
Applications must be submitted online by midnight on 31 August 2026 (EEST). Required attachments include a cover letter, CV (using the required template), master’s degree transcript and certificate, and a writing sample such as a thesis, essay, or publication.
