About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Business Model Life Cycle Assessment (BMLCA). This opportunity is based in the division of Environmental Systems Analysis, a vibrant and international group dedicated to research on the assessment and sociotechnical transition of technical systems to address environmental challenges and resource limitations. The division employs a systems approach, integrating technology, natural systems, and human actors.

The research project focuses on Business Model LCA, a novel methodology for environmental assessment of business models that combines environmental and financial analysis to evaluate the impact of business performance. As a doctoral student, you will apply BMLCA to real business models, aiming to help companies achieve decoupling within their practices. The project is part of the Mistra Challenge-funded Delish initiative, in collaboration with Stockholm School of Business, and involves interdisciplinary research combining life cycle analysis, business economics, and market analysis.

Your main activities will include modelling business models using BMLCA, collecting primary data (especially financial and production systems data), developing analyses to explore business model designs, and contributing to workshops with case companies. You will also develop your own scientific concepts and communicate research results both verbally and in writing. The position includes advanced-level courses within the Graduate School of Energy, Environment and Systems, with a specialization in environmental systems analysis, and may involve teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (or equivalent), with strong English communication skills and a multidisciplinary background covering both technical and actor-oriented skills. Experience with BMLCA, research projects, scientific publications, or industry/international collaboration is advantageous. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

The position is fully funded, offering a starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (from May 1, 2026), employee benefits, and a fixed-term appointment of four years (with possible extension to five years if teaching duties are included). Chalmers provides a dynamic working environment in Gothenburg, with generous benefits, support for gender equality, and Swedish language courses for non-native speakers.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Required documents include CV, personal letter, motivation statements, thesis, and transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is July 26, 2026.
