About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is advertising a Doctoral student position in developing PEM fuel cells by multiscale modeling (Reference number REF 2026-0344). The project sits in Chemical Physics and focuses on sustainable energy systems, heterogeneous (electro)catalysis, and fuel cells. The research is highly interdisciplinary and combines atomistic modeling, electronic structure calculations, density functional theory, mean-field modeling, and Monte Carlo simulations to study catalytic reactions and fuel cell degradation.

The specific topic is proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), with an emphasis on understanding the mechanisms behind long-term stability and degradation. The project aims to generate insight into how catalysts can be improved and how operating conditions can be optimized to minimize degradation. It is a collaboration between Volvo Technology AB and Chemical Physics at Chalmers.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science (or, for degrees earned outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted); background in quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and statistical mechanics; documented programming experience; strong interest in atomistic modeling of surface reactions; and good written and spoken English. Experience in atomic-scale modeling, reaction kinetics modeling, and Python programming is considered a plus.

Funding and terms: the position is fully funded from the start. It is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20% of working hours, extending the position up to five years. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026).

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden. Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date.

Application: submit the application in English as PDF files via the application form on the vacancy page. Required documents include a CV, personal letter, a brief introduction and motivation, and bachelor’s and, if available, master’s thesis together with transcripts. Deadline: August 16, 2026.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
