About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in high-entropy ceramics at the Division of Materials and Manufacture, Department of Mechanical Engineering. This research project focuses on developing sustainable, high-temperature ceramic materials by reusing industrial waste, such as byproducts from heating systems and glass production. The aim is to create durable ceramics that perform well in extreme environments while reducing environmental impact and supporting circular resource use.

As a doctoral student, you will join a dynamic, international team dedicated to innovative materials research and advanced manufacturing. The division is known for its strong industry ties and commitment to real-world impact, offering a collaborative and supportive environment. The project involves experimental work, including powder and bulk materials synthesis, materials characterization, and studies of mechanical and oxidation behavior. You will also have opportunities to teach undergraduate courses or perform other duties, up to 20% of your working hours.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Ceramics Engineering, or an equivalent subject. For candidates educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal English skills are required, along with experience in ceramic materials, synthesis, and characterization. Experience with ceramics for high-temperature applications is advantageous. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

The position is fully funded, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and includes full employee benefits. The appointment is for four years, with the possibility to extend to five years if teaching duties are undertaken. Chalmers offers a vibrant working environment in Gothenburg, with generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish language courses for international staff.

To apply, submit your application via the online form by 29 May 2026. Required documents include your CV, personal letter, motivation, thesis, and transcripts, all in PDF format. Incomplete applications or those sent by email will not be considered. Contact details to references will be requested after the interview. For questions, contact Professor Sheng Guo at [email protected].

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in engineering and natural sciences, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation. Join us to contribute to cutting-edge research and shape the future of materials science.
