About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is advertising a doctoral student position in multiscale modelling of effects of defects in composites. The project is based in the Division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering within the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The doctoral research is part of LEGEND, a European doctoral network under a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, bringing together research organisations and industry partners to advance understanding of defects in composite structures. The work will focus on developing efficient multiscale modelling tools for fibre-reinforced composites, linking small-scale material defects to large-scale structural performance.

The research aims to create a two-scale simulation framework that combines detailed meso-scale models with an adaptive shell-based macro model. The goal is to predict how defects influence strength, stiffness, and fracture behaviour, and to produce practical design guidelines and a robust analysis framework for damage-tolerant composite design.

The project includes collaborations and secondments totalling six months during the first three years at Airbus (Portugal), University of Kore (Italy), and Leonardo S.p.A. (Italy). The environment is described as international, inclusive, and collaborative, with connections to experts in composite mechanics through the LEGEND network.

Applicants should have documented experience in continuum mechanics, the finite element method, and the mechanics of fibre-reinforced polymers, either through education, coursework, or a thesis project with high grades. For students educated outside Sweden, a four-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.

This is a PhD-level opening, with an application deadline of 2026-08-31 23:59 (Europe/Stockholm). Interested candidates should apply via the online application link provided by Chalmers University of Technology.
