About this position

The Department of Communication Systems at the EECS school, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, invites applications for a doctoral student position in Signal Processing for 6G Communications. This research opportunity is part of the DICE-6G research environment grant funded by the Swedish Research Council, focusing on advancing the physical layer of next-generation wireless networks. The project centers on multi-antenna MIMO technology, which is foundational to both 5G and emerging 6G networks. While 5G utilizes 64 antennas per base station and 4 per device, 6G is expected to scale these numbers significantly, enabling advanced beamforming, spatial multiplexing, and integrated communication and sensing (ISAC).

As a doctoral student, you will contribute to theoretical research in 6G MIMO technology, developing new communication theory, signal processing algorithms, and network architectural concepts. The project aims to deliver ubiquitous network services by leveraging cell-free MIMO technology, integrating ground-based distributed base stations with low-earth-orbit satellites. Key methods include MIMO communication theory, array signal processing, optimization, and machine learning. The research is primarily theoretical, with access to KTH's testbeds for potential experimental validation. Note that the position does not involve hardware or antenna design; the focus is on algorithmic and theoretical advancements.

You will join a world-leading research group led by Prof. Emil Björnson (IEEE Fellow, Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher), with supervision also proposed from Cicek Cavdar, Vitaly Petrov, or Gabor Fodor. The group is renowned for its contributions to wireless communications and signal processing. The position offers full-time employment, a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement, and access to excellent employee benefits. The research environment is creative, dynamic, and international, with a strong commitment to equality, diversity, and sustainability.

Eligibility requires a second cycle degree (master's or equivalent), or completion of at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at second-cycle level), or substantially equivalent knowledge. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Successful candidates will demonstrate goal orientation, perseverance, independence, collaboration skills, professional approach, analytical ability, and effective English communication. Applications must include a CV, application letter, diplomas and grades, certificates of language proficiency, certified translations if needed, and representative publications or technical reports.

Apply online through KTH's recruitment system by the deadline of March 12, 2026. For further information, contact Prof. Emil Björnson at [email protected]. Join KTH to shape the future of wireless communications and contribute to global connectivity and innovation.
