About this position

Join the Intelligent Heart Technology Lab at KTH Royal Institute of Technology as a doctoral student in Soft Robotic Medical Devices for Vascular Applications. This PhD opportunity is based in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems, with a focus on advancing cardiovascular health technologies through the development of implantable and wearable systems. The lab's research includes artificial hearts, blood pressure sensors, and soft robots designed to adapt to physiological and mental needs.

The project centers on designing interfaces between active soft devices and dynamic vasculature, integrating methods from soft robotics, biomechanics, vascular biology, and device manufacturing. You will validate new technologies in translational preclinical models and collaborate closely with the Karolinska Institute and Hospital, particularly in vascular surgery, fostering interdisciplinary research and innovation.

Supervision will be provided by Assistant Professor Seraina Dual and Associate Professor Ljubica Matic, offering guidance in a dynamic and supportive environment. The position is fully funded, with a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement, and includes employee benefits. The employment is full-time for up to four years, with the possibility of renewal as per university regulations.

Eligibility requires a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or equivalent, with at least 240 higher education credits (including 60 at the second-cycle level). English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Candidates should have a background in biomedical, mechanical, or robotics engineering, and a strong interest in biomechanics, micro and nano systems, and physiology. Selection emphasizes personal skills, independence, collaboration, and the ability to analyze complex issues within an interdisciplinary setting.

To apply, submit your application via KTH’s recruitment system, including a CV, application letter, certified copies of diplomas and grades, proof of English proficiency, and representative publications or technical reports. The deadline for applications is January 7, 2026. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Seraina Dual at [email protected].
