About this position

ETH Zurich is inviting applications for a Doctoral Student position on the impacts of climate and hydrological extremes on water quality. The project is hosted at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich and the WSL-Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, and it is embedded in the NCCR CLIM+ programme funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

The research focuses on understanding how climate- and hydrology-related extremes such as heatwaves, droughts, and floods affect water quality indicators including nutrients and oxygen. The successful candidate will use these process-based insights to develop data-driven models for predicting water quality under future climate change. The project includes publishing in scientific journals and presenting findings at national and international conferences.

The position is part of the Hydrology & Climate Impacts in Mountain Regions research group, which studies water and climate extremes in mountain environments under global change. The group is based between ETH Zurich in Zurich and SLF in Davos, and the work location is flexible between Zurich and Davos.

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in hydrology, climate sciences, environmental sciences, or a closely related discipline. The profile also calls for strong hydrological process knowledge, experience in statistical and/or data-driven modeling, strong programming ability ideally in Python and/or R, and familiarity with large hydrological, meteorological, or climate datasets. Very good English communication skills are required, and knowledge of a Swiss national language is considered an asset. A collaborative mindset and motivation to work in an interdisciplinary, international environment are highly valued.
