About this position
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is inviting applications for the EMBL International PhD Programme (EIPP), a fully funded PhD opportunity in the life sciences. The programme is based across EMBL sites in Heidelberg, Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Hinxton near Cambridge, and Rome, offering access to an international and interdisciplinary research environment.
EIPP is designed to combine strong scientific training with close mentoring, creative freedom, and collaborative teamwork. It is particularly suited to candidates who want to work in basic research across molecular life sciences and related quantitative and computational disciplines. Research topics span areas such as molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, structural biology, systems biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, chemical biology, neuroscience, microbiology, biophysics, machine learning, algorithms, statistics, and biomedical engineering.
The programme welcomes applicants from a broad range of academic backgrounds, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, and Molecular Medicine. To be eligible, applicants must hold, or expect to receive before starting at EMBL, a university degree that would formally qualify them for PhD study or an equivalent programme in the country where the degree was obtained.
Funding is fully provided, and the post includes broad health care and pension benefits. The application deadline is 12 October 2026, and recruited candidates are expected to start no later than October 2027. Applications are submitted online through the official EMBL application page. For questions, the EMBL Graduate Office is listed as the contact point.
