About this position

This PhD project at South East Technological University aims to transform osteoarthritis (OA) care in Ireland by advancing shared decision-making and outcome measurement. OA is a major cause of pain and disability, and treatment decisions often vary across healthcare services. The research will identify the most practical patient questionnaires for measuring pain, function, and quality of life in OA care, investigate how shared decision-making currently occurs in GP, physiotherapy, and hospital clinics, and pilot evidence-based tools to ensure patient preferences are central to treatment choices.

Working closely with clinicians, patients, and Arthritis Ireland, the successful candidate will help design a consistent, patient-centred OA care pathway that can be scaled nationally and adapted for other chronic conditions. The project offers a unique opportunity to influence real-world healthcare practice and policy in Ireland.

The scholarship is funded by the SETU 2025 Presidents Scholarship Programme, providing a stipend of €22,500 per annum, full tuition fees (€5,750 per annum), and research costs (€2,000 per annum) for four years. The position is full-time and based in the Research Centre at South East Technological University (Carlow).

Applicants must have a primary degree (First or Upper Second-Class Honours) in Physiotherapy, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Psychology, or a related discipline. Research experience, competence in data analysis (SPSS, R, or equivalent), strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential. Clinical experience in musculoskeletal or chronic disease care, familiarity with OA management, experience with patient-reported outcome measures, knowledge of shared decision-making, survey and qualitative research skills, implementation science exposure, and stakeholder engagement are desirable. Non-native English speakers must meet SETU’s English language requirements.

To apply, complete the online Application Form from the SETU website, quoting the advert reference code SETU_2025_15_CW, and upload all supporting documents. Applications must be submitted via this route. For informal queries, contact Dr Clare Lodge at [email protected]. For application and admission queries, contact [email protected]. The closing date is Wednesday, 22 April 2026 at 4PM Irish time.

This position is ideal for candidates passionate about improving healthcare outcomes, patient engagement, and translational research in musculoskeletal and chronic disease care.
