This EngD opportunity combines image analysis, machine learning, software development, and cultural heritage conservation in a high-impact collaboration between TU/e, ASML, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Materials innovation institute (M2i). The project focuses on the development of semi-automatic crack detection and classification methods for paintings using the fusion of high-resolution colour and surface height data.
You will work on a challenging multimodal image analysis problem where cracks must be distinguished from brushstrokes, impasto, and pigment variations. The research involves robust image processing, crack descriptor extraction, multimodal fusion, and the development of an interactive software tool that can support conservators in documentation, monitoring, and decision-making. The work is designed to assist expert judgement rather than replace it.
The position is embedded in the Smart Buildings & Cities EngD program, which combines postgraduate education with an individual design project. Alongside the project, you will follow courses in design methods, entrepreneurship, management, and technical topics such as image processing, data science, and software development. The project is carried out in close collaboration with an industrial partner and university supervisors, with the trainee responsible for managing and executing their own project work.
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Structural/Civil Engineering, or a related field. Strong programming skills are expected, especially in Python or PyTorch, and experience with image analysis, machine learning, or damage/defect detection is considered an advantage. A strong command of English is required, and teamwork plus interest in working with industrial and museum partners are important. Experience or affinity with cultural heritage and conservation is welcome but not mandatory.
The position is full-time for two years and includes a salary under the Dutch university collective agreement at scale TOIO (€3,173 gross per month), a year-end bonus, vacation pay, and other benefits.
