About this position

EngD opportunity at the University of Twente in the Netherlands focused on AI-robotic integration for arm assistance in home settings.

The project, SAISaAR-bot, develops an AI-based system for autonomous use of the iFLOAT robotic arm to support assistance and rehabilitation in daily home-care environments. It is part of a Vanguard Vinnovate collaboration linking East Netherlands and Emilia-Romagna, and brings together academia, healthcare, and industry to advance practical assistive technology.

You will work on the further development of the iFLOAT upper-limb support system, currently at Technology Readiness Level 6, with the aim of creating an AI-enhanced Human-Machine Interface that is more intuitive, adaptive, and suitable for changing user needs. The work includes designing and testing concepts for human-machine interaction, integrating emerging technologies into assistive robotic systems, collaborating with patients and healthcare professionals, developing prototypes with industrial partners, and evaluating usability and implementation potential.

The consortium includes the University of Twente, Assistive Innovations B.V., Re:Lab s.r.l., and Stichting Revalidatiecentrum Roessingh. The project is especially relevant to candidates interested in rehabilitation robotics, assistive technologies, user-centred design, machine learning, and healthcare innovation.

Applicants should have, or soon obtain, a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. The post also calls for knowledge of artificial intelligence, programming, and user-centred design, plus strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary, international environment. Fluency in English is required; some applicants may need to provide IELTS, TOEFL-iBT, or Cambridge CAE-C results.

This is a two-year full-time EngD position at the University of Twente with full employee status, pension and health care benefits, a tailored post-master design programme, conference visits, and a gross monthly salary of €3029, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The application deadline is 2026-09-20.
