About this position

AfricaLics is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from African research or academic institutions to host its PhD Academies (2027, 2028, 2029, 2030) and research conferences (2028, 2030). This is an opportunity for institutions working in innovation studies, development studies, and science, technology and innovation (STI) to strengthen research capacity, build scientific communities, and increase visibility as an STI hub.

What the activities are about: AfricaLics PhD Academies support PhD students enrolled at African universities who are working on policy-oriented analysis of science, technology, and innovation. The academies provide training, feedback on original research, peer networking, and interaction with leading academics and policy makers. AfricaLics conferences bring together PhD students, early-career researchers, and established scholars to present research, discuss thematic issues, and build collaborative relationships across disciplines.

Who should apply: African research or academic institutions focused on innovation and development. Low-income countries are encouraged to apply. Hosting institutions should be prepared to support local fundraising, venue arrangements, and event organization.

Funding: Sida support is limited. For the 2027–2029 PhD academies, support is mainly for travel costs for accepted students from African low- and lower-middle-income countries, with limited venue-related support. For the 2028 conference, support is limited to travel support for selected AfricaLics alumni with accepted papers. For 2030 activities, no funding is currently secured, so hosts must help mobilize resources.

Application requirements: Submit a 100-word abstract, institutional profile, and resource mobilization plan using the AfricaLics EOI template. The deadline is 31 July 2026.

How to apply: Download the template, prepare the required EOI documents, and send them to [email protected]. Review the AfricaLics thematic areas and the open call details before submitting.
