About this position

Graduate position (MS or PhD) in fish ecology at The Ohio State University

Dr. Jennifer Hellmann is recruiting a highly motivated master’s or PhD student to join her lab in the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at The Ohio State University. The project is centered on fish ecology, with emphasis on ecology, evolution, behavior, ichthyology, and the role of developmental and transgenerational plasticity in helping organisms respond to natural and human-induced environmental change.

The student will develop an independent research program that complements current lab work on marine and freshwater fishes, including species such as sticklebacks and mangrove rivulus. Field and/or laboratory work is expected, and the lab has existing field sites in California and Alaska, with possible work in Florida.

This position is fully funded through teaching and research assistantships and includes a stipend of $33,000–$34,000 per year, full tuition waiver, and health insurance.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree and be enthusiastic about fish-related research, with strong communication skills and attention to detail. Prior research experience in ecology, evolution, behavior, or ichthyology is preferred but not required. The lab also welcomes applicants from under-represented groups in STEM, including first-generation students.

To apply, email Dr. Jennifer Hellmann with a CV, a brief statement of research interests, an unofficial transcript, and contact information for three references. Informal review begins immediately, and the formal deadline is November 15, 2026.
