About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Glasgow in AI-driven surveillance for respiratory infections.
This project sits within the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research and the School of Infection and Immunity, with training and secondments through the EU-funded DETECTIVE MSCA Doctoral Network. The research focuses on building a pathogen-agnostic, AI-enabled surveillance system for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) by integrating clinical, laboratory, genomic, and radiological data. The aim is to improve early detection of abnormal clusters, identify high-risk patients and SARI endotypes, and strengthen outbreak preparedness and response.
Key research themes include virology, bioinformatics, genomics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, machine learning, health informatics, epidemiology, and public health. The doctoral candidate will work with secure healthcare datasets in Trusted Research Environments (TREs), develop real-time surveillance algorithms, and validate multi-modal AI models using data from the CHARISMA study and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a First Class or 2.1 degree in life sciences, biomedical sciences, quantitative biology, or a related field; a strong interest in infectious disease research; and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary, international setting. Desirable experience includes health informatics or AI/machine learning, and a relevant Master's degree. Applicants must also satisfy Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rules and must not already hold a doctoral degree.
