About this position
PhD opportunity at Aston University in AI-enabled tactile sensing for driver fatigue detection in smart mobility systems.
This fully funded PhD project focuses on privacy-preserving driver monitoring using tactile and pressure-sensing surfaces rather than face images or wearable electrodes. The research will explore tactile sensing system design, data acquisition, signal processing, feature extraction, and AI-accelerated fatigue detection models for real-time recognition and early-warning prediction.
Research themes: tactile sensing, pressure sensors, machine learning, deep learning, signal processing, sensor data analysis, embedded systems, embodied AI, and smart mobility safety.
Funding: fully funded studentship with a bursary to cover fees and an annual maintenance allowance.
Location: Birmingham, United Kingdom. Start date: January 2027. Duration: 3.5 years.
Eligibility: applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a relevant bachelor’s degree with First Class or 2.1, or a relevant bachelor’s plus a master’s with Merit or higher. Suitable backgrounds include Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electronic Engineering, Robotics, Data Science, or related areas. Familiarity with machine/deep learning, signal processing, sensor data analysis, embedded systems, or embodied AI is expected; Python skills and interest in tactile sensing and fatigue detection are desirable.
Supervisory team: Dr Dan Dai, Dr Zhengjia Xu, and Prof. Jose Ricardo Sodré.
How to apply: submit a complete application including transcripts/certificates, a research statement, a personal statement, two academic referees, English language evidence, and a passport copy. Incomplete applications will be rejected. Interviews will be held online via Microsoft Teams.
Deadline: 15 September 2026.
