About this position

PhD opportunity at Aston University in AI-Enhanced 3D Atomic-Scale Imaging of Nano-catalytic Materials for Clean Energy Conversion, delivered through the Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training (EPSRC/BBSRC). The project is based at the University of Warwick and focuses on materials science, physics, chemistry, electrocatalysis, electron microscopy, AI/ML, and clean energy conversion.

The research aims to develop new low-dose 3D atomic-scale imaging methods for functional energy materials using multi-slice 4D STEM, combined with deep learning and machine learning for reconstruction, feature recognition, and analysis of dynamic nanoscale structures. The project targets key catalytic reactions such as HER, ORR, and CO2RR, with applications in renewable energy and net-zero technologies.

Funding: fully funded four-year studentship, tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805/year for 2026/27), paid tuition fees, and a research training support grant.

Eligibility highlights: first-class or strong upper second-class degree in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field; knowledge of solid-state physics, nanomaterials, or catalytic materials; hands-on microscopy or image/data analysis experience; strong analytical/computational skills; good scientific communication. Experience with electron microscopy, Python, MATLAB, or ML frameworks is desirable. This opportunity is only open to home fee status applicants; international candidates will not be considered.

Application: submit an Expression of Interest via the provided form. Shortlisted candidates may meet the supervisors, and successful applicants will later submit a formal application through the home institution.

Funding details

Fully funded four-year studentship with a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 per year for 2026/27), paid tuition fees, and a generous research training support grant.

What's required

A first-class or strong upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field. Applicants should have knowledge of solid-state physics, nanomaterials, or catalytic materials relevant to clean energy and net-zero technologies, plus hands-on laboratory or computational experience in microscopy or image/data analysis. Strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills, good written and verbal communication skills, and enthusiasm for advanced microscopy, sustainable energy materials, and emerging imaging technologies are required. Experience with electron microscopy, Python, MATLAB, or machine-learning frameworks, and prior work in catalysis or beam-sensitive functional materials are desirable. Home fee status is required; international candidates are not eligible. English language evidence may be required if English is not the first language.

How to apply

Submit an Expression of Interest via the application form. If shortlisted, you may be invited to meet the potential supervisors. If offered a place after interviews, you must submit a formal application through the home institution.
