About this position

Ghent University is advertising a fully funded PhD position for the ERC project HAIR – Hair, Identity, Beauty, and the Self in Muslim Contexts: Emotional Landscapes and Changing Femininities Beyond the Veil. This is the Egypt subproject, based in the Department of Languages and Cultures / Ghent Centre for Arabic, Islamic and Middle East Studies.

The project sits at the intersection of Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies, Anthropology, Gender Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Religious Studies, Cultural Studies, and Literature. It examines beauty, hair practices, body politics, identity formation, gender norms, selfhood, and emotional landscapes in Muslim-majority contexts, with a focus on Egypt and comparative references to Lebanon and the UAE. Methods include ethnographic fieldwork, literary analysis, and digital methodologies.

The PhD candidate will conduct independent doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Lisa Maria Franke as part of an interdisciplinary international team. Suitable proposals may address gendered body politics in the Egyptian context, including generational structures, religious discourses and political agendas, or social expectations around embodied practices and representations.

Funding: fully funded doctoral fellowship, initially 12 months and extendable to a maximum of 48 months. The fellowship equals 100% of the net salary of an AAP staff member and is tax-free under Belgian doctoral fellowship regulations.

Eligibility highlights: relevant MA degree, exceptional dissertation, strong Arabic and English, interest in gender/embodiment/literature/Muslim societies, and willingness to do fieldwork and international research stays.

Deadline: 31 July 2026, 23:59. Location: Ghent, Belgium, with international fieldwork including Egypt.
