About this position
Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences, in partnership with the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) and the TASS Research Institute Wales, is advertising a fully funded PhD studentship on arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) following ACL injury and reconstruction.
The project sits at the intersection of sports science, biomechanics, physiotherapy, physiology, and sport psychology. The successful candidate will investigate neuromuscular activation deficits after ACL injury/surgery and explore how psychological factors such as confidence, fear of reinjury, rehabilitation beliefs, and social support influence recovery. The aim is to develop a more objective understanding of rehabilitation and evaluate activation-led rehabilitation strategies that may improve return-to-sport outcomes.
The studentship begins in September 2026 and includes full UK tuition fees plus a UKRI-equivalent 3-year stipend. International applicants are eligible, but they will receive only a tuition discount equivalent to the UK fee rate and must cover the remaining overseas tuition fee.
Applicants should normally hold a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in Sport and Exercise Science, Physiotherapy, Human Movement Sciences, Sports Rehabilitation, or a related discipline. A postgraduate qualification in biomechanics or a sports-science-related area is desirable. The post also values experience in applied performance settings, work with ACL patients, and skills in biomechanical/neuromuscular assessment, isokinetic dynamometry, electromyography, transcranial magnetic stimulation, laboratory data collection, and multidisciplinary sports science environments.
