About this position
Fully funded PhD positions are open at the Max Delbrück Center in biomedical sciences. The program is designed for students interested in discovery-driven research on the basis of health and disease, with clinically relevant applications in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
The PhD program offers interdisciplinary research across three main areas: Genes, Cells and Cell-based Medicine, Molecular Processes and Therapies, and Integrative Biomedicine. Doctoral researchers work in an international environment alongside postdocs, group leaders, clinicians, and professional staff, with structured training, dedicated mentorship, and career development support. Students may also join the interdisciplinary HEIBRiDS Data Science School.
Funding: the positions are fully funded through an initial 3-year employment contract with the MDC. The salary is competitive and based on 65% TVöD 13, with an estimated monthly net payment of about 1800 EUR. Health and social insurance are included, and many contracts are extended for an additional year. Tuition fees per semester are approximately 300–320 EUR.
Eligibility: applicants should hold or expect to obtain a master’s degree or equivalent in biology, biotechnology, medicine, molecular medicine, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field. A research master’s thesis is generally required, and applicants must have relevant research experience. The required MSc final grade is at least 75% or a German grade of 2.5 ('good'). Candidates must be early-stage researchers, meaning the master’s degree was obtained within the last 4 years and they do not already hold a doctoral degree. English proficiency is required; German is not required. Language test certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS, or CAE are recommended but not mandatory.
Application window: central recruitment calls are open annually each fall, with calls open from June to August, online interviews in October, and a January start date (latest 4 months after interviews). The deadline in this post is 2026-08-24.
How to apply: submit your application exclusively through the MDC online application portal. Email applications are not accepted for the central recruitment rounds. For individual doctoral vacancies outside central recruitment, contact the relevant group leader directly or follow the open positions announcements.
