About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and carbon-formation modeling at Oakland University, United States.
The E-Carbon Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking one PhD student to work on computational research in high-temperature reacting systems. The project covers methane and hydrocarbon pyrolysis, electrified thermal reactors, particle formation, and carbon structural evolution.
Research directions include CFD of reacting flows, particle and population-balance modeling, chemical kinetics, thermochemical reactor modeling, multiscale modeling of carbon formation and morphology, and development/integration of reduced-order models into reactor simulations.
Eligibility: Applicants must have a completed master’s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Strong scientific programming skills are required, with experience in Fortran, C++, Python, MATLAB, Julia, or similar languages. The ad specifically asks for applicants who have personally developed or substantially modified scientific code; simply using commercial CFD software is not enough.
Funding: The position is fully funded and includes tuition support, a research and/or teaching assistantship stipend, and standard graduate assistant benefits. Funding is expected for up to four years, subject to satisfactory academic and research progress.
Application: Interested candidates should email Dr. Francisco Cepeda with a CV, unofficial transcripts, a brief statement of relevant computational experience and research interests, and evidence of relevant work such as a publication, thesis chapter, code sample, or GitHub repository if available. Include your earliest feasible start term. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
Location: Michigan, United States. International applications are welcome.
