About this position
Fully funded International PhD scholarship opportunity at Curtin University on circular economy and sustainability transitions.
The project asks where circular economy strategies fit within the broader response to the global polycrisis, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource depletion, energy insecurity, food vulnerability, and geopolitical instability. The research aims to develop an integrated sustainability transition framework that positions circular economy approaches alongside decarbonisation, renewable energy transition, regenerative development, nature-based solutions, resilience thinking, Doughnut Economics, and post-growth/degrowth frameworks.
The project is jointly supported by Associate Professor Atiq Zaman at the Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute and Associate Professor Martin Geissdoerfer at the Sustainability Transition Lab, Monash University. The post is relevant to students interested in sustainability policy, environmental governance, systems thinking, policy analysis, and interdisciplinary research on circular economy and climate transition.
Funding is described as fully funded, and the preferred candidate may be considered for an RTP scholarship. Internship opportunities with industry partners in Australia and internationally are also mentioned.
Eligibility highlights include strong interest in sustainability transitions and circular economy, experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research, knowledge of sustainability and environmental policy, strong analytical and academic writing skills, and ideally prior research experience in circular economy, sustainability assessment, policy analysis, systems mapping, or interdisciplinary sustainability studies.
