About this position

South Dakota State University is recruiting two fully funded PhD students for the Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. The position is based in the research group of Yiming Liu, whose lab develops next-generation membrane and electrochemical separation technologies with a focus on fundamental science and engineering at the materials–water interface.

Research topics include critical mineral recovery (including rare earth elements), water reuse and desalination, electrodialysis and electrochemical separations, membrane science and engineering, and advanced materials and interfacial processes for environmental applications. The group integrates membrane science, electrochemistry, interfacial science, advanced materials characterization, and data-driven approaches.

Applicants from Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, or Agricultural Engineering and closely related fields are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in membrane science, electrochemistry, water treatment, or environmental materials is desirable but not required. The post also notes that MS applicants are welcome.

Funding is described as a full tuition waiver plus a stipend of around USD 25,000 per year. The start date is Spring 2027, with a stated start date of January 11, 2027. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until all positions are filled, and the listed deadline for receipt is 2026-09-30.
