About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Limerick in the Department of Biological Sciences on Efficiency and Optimisation of Constructed Wetlands and Passive Treatment Systems for Wastewater Management.
This project focuses on nature-based solutions (NbS) for sustainable wastewater treatment, with emphasis on the efficiency, optimisation, and practical application of constructed wetlands and other passive treatment systems. The research will examine how low-energy treatment technologies can be designed and improved to treat wastewater, including industrial effluents and treated wastewater streams, in a resilient and environmentally sustainable way.
Research topics may include treatment efficiency, hydraulic loading, retention time, substrate characteristics, vegetation, temperature, redox conditions, seasonal variability, system design, operational optimisation, polishing of treated effluents, modelling, statistical analysis, data-driven prediction, and scaling laboratory/pilot systems toward real-world use.
The project involves laboratory experiments, pilot-scale investigations, and field-based research. The successful candidate may work with real wastewater and industrial effluents, conduct detailed water-quality analysis, develop and operate experimental treatment systems, and apply quantitative methods to evaluate performance.
Suitable applicants should have a relevant Bachelor's or Master's degree and a strong interest in environmental science, biotechnology, chemical engineering, civil engineering, water and wastewater treatment, ecological engineering, or nature-based solutions. Strong analytical skills, experimental motivation, and good communication skills are important; experience with microbiology, chemical analysis, modelling, statistics, or data science is helpful but not required.
This is a fully funded PhD and is open to students worldwide. Applications should be emailed as a single PDF to [email protected] with the subject line NBS WaterTreatment PhD. The deadline shown on the listing is 1 November 2026.

What's required
Applicants should have a relevant Bachelor's or Master's degree with a strong academic record. Desired background includes environmental engineering, environmental science, water and wastewater treatment, biotechnology, chemical engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related discipline. Candidates should show interest in wastewater treatment, environmental biotechnology, ecological engineering or nature-based solutions, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, interest in experimental laboratory/field research, good quantitative and scientific communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience with water-quality analysis, constructed wetlands, wastewater treatment, environmental microbiology, chemical analysis, statistical analysis, modelling or data science would be advantageous but is not essential.
How to apply
Prepare a single PDF containing your CV, cover letter, education details, relevant work experience, and the names/contact details of two referees. Email the application to [email protected] with the subject line 'NBS WaterTreatment PhD'. Shortlisted candidates will later be asked for academic transcripts.
