About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity in GeoAI at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science (GIS).

The Geospatial Computing and Society Lab studies how geospatial technologies are designed, deployed, and governed, with a focus on social consequences and more just futures. Research themes include spatial data science, geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), critical GeoAI, algorithmic models, data systems, privacy, socio-spatial inequalities, and the social/political/ethical implications of emerging geospatial technologies.

The supervisor, Yue Lin, is recruiting a motivated PhD student to start in Fall 2027. The post welcomes applicants from technical backgrounds (such as AI and spatial data science) as well as critical/social science backgrounds (such as science and technology studies, urban studies, and critical data studies), or combinations of both.

Funding is described as fully funded, with applicants considered for teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. Assistantships and fellowships may include tuition waivers and other financial support. There is no separate application for TA/RA funding; submitting the graduate application by the deadline places applicants in the funding pool.

Application materials for the research-based graduate programs include a statement of purpose, personal statement, three recommendation letters, and transcripts/degree certification. International applicants generally need TOEFL or IELTS unless exempt under Graduate College rules. GRE is not required or considered.

Deadline for Fall 2027 research-based MA/MS/PhD admission is 15 December 2026. Applicants should submit the formal application through the University of Illinois Graduate College portal and may contact potential advisors before applying.
