About this position
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship at Aston University in Birmingham, UK, within the UK Multidisciplinary Centre for Neuromorphic Computing and the School of Engineering and Innovation.
This project, Uncovering Human Cortical Growth Principles for Neuromorphic Computing, sits at the intersection of neuromorphic computing, computational neuroscience, biology, statistics, and physics. The research focuses on developing a new computational framework to study how human brain networks grow and self-organise. Using high-resolution multielectrode array (MEA) recordings from developing human cortical networks, the project aims to build a dynamic Bayesian inference model grounded in statistical physics to infer how synaptic connections grow, strengthen, and prune over time.
The successful candidate will work on advanced theory and challenging biological data analysis, and will interact closely with experimental neurobiologists. The broader goal is to uncover the rules of human neuronal plasticity and translate these insights into novel neuromorphic computing architectures.
Funding: The studentship includes a bursary covering tuition fees plus an annual maintenance allowance.
Eligibility: Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a Master’s degree with a weighted average of 60% or above, and/or a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, physics, statistics, or a related subject with a strong mathematical background. Overseas applicants are welcome to apply.
Application materials: transcripts and certificates, a research statement, a personal statement, a CV, two academic referees, evidence of English language proficiency, and a passport copy. Incomplete applications will be automatically rejected.
Location: Birmingham, UK. The successful candidate is expected to be within reasonable distance of campus and visit in person regularly.
