About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Sheffield within the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network i3WaterS – Intelligent, Innovative and Integrative Water Systems.
The project focuses on drinking water distribution systems (DWDS), with the goal of developing rational analyses and explainable intelligent decision support to improve resilience against day-to-day incidents and extreme events linked to climate change, including floods and droughts. The research combines water systems, civil engineering, environmental science, machine learning, ecological modelling, bioinformatics, and microbial/environmental/hydraulic data integration. The specific objective is to build intelligent monitoring and predictive models for early detection of water quality risks and improved DWDS resilience.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in a PhD programme at the University of Sheffield and will work under the supervision of Dr Isabel Douterelo Soler, with co-supervision from Dr Manuel Herrera and Dr David Ayala-Cabrera, plus mentoring from a water industry expert.
Eligibility highlights: a minimum 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in Civil and Environmental Engineering (water), Environmental Sciences, or a related subject; aptitude for research in drinking water systems; familiarity with Python, R, or related programming languages; and willingness to collaborate with researchers, industry, and end-users. Experience with DNA sequencing and bioinformatics is highly desirable. Applicants must also meet the doctoral access requirements, including English language requirements, for the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering.
Funding: fully funded PhD position. No stipend amount or tuition details are specified in the post.
How to apply: open the full position details link, review the project information, and follow the application instructions provided. Check that you satisfy the degree and English language requirements before submitting your application.
