About this position

Project title: How sights become signals for learning
This project asks how the brain learns that a previously meaningless visual cue predicts something important, building on recent findings that activity in the superior colliculus is required for dopamine responses to learned visual cues. The student will investigate how visual information gains access to dopamine learning systems and how these signals emerge during learning.
Research areas and methods: systems neuroscience, dopamine learning, visual learning, behavioural experiments, in vivo electrophysiology, fibre photometry, genetically encoded neurotransmitter sensors, fast-scan cyclic voltammetry, optogenetics, and computational modelling.
Eligibility: open to UK and international applicants. Applicants from neuroscience, biomedical sciences, and quantitative disciplines are welcome. The studentship can be undertaken full-time or part-time.
Funding: fully funded PhD studentship.
