About this position

PhD opportunity at Aston University in novel polymer systems for ostomy adhesive applications, working with Prof. Paul Topham and Dr Matthew Derry from the Aston Institute for Membrane Excellence (AIME) in collaboration with Coloplast.

The project focuses on polymer science, materials science, and biomedical engineering, with research on next-generation adhesive materials for advanced ostomy care. You will investigate polymer synthesis and fabrication strategies, charged-to-neutral monomers, hydrophilicity, crosslinking, adhesion strength, moisture uptake and transport, viscoelasticity, degradation resistance, and interfacial behaviour with skin and bodily fluids.

This is a fully funded PhD at Aston University in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Funding covers all tuition fees and includes an annual stipend.

Eligibility highlights include a relevant bachelor's degree with First Class or 2.1, or a relevant bachelor's plus a master's with Merit or higher. Strong laboratory skills, polymer/materials knowledge, critical thinking, data analysis, independent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork are essential. Experience with hydrogels, surface chemistry, FTIR, SEM, and mechanical testing is desirable.

Application deadline: 15 September 2026. Start date: January 2027. Applicants must submit transcripts and certificates, a research statement, a personal statement, two academic referees, English language evidence, and a passport copy.
