About this position

Vilnius University’s Life Sciences Center is advertising a fully funded PhD position in the lab of Gytis Dudas (PI) focused on the evolution of orthomyxoviruses and the recovery of missing viral genome segments from public sequencing data.

The project sits at the intersection of biology, bioinformatics, computer science, and comparative genomics. The lab works with large volumes of processed and partially processed metatranscriptomic data, using both homology-dependent approaches (for example BLAST and HMM profiles) and homology-independent approaches (such as co-occurrence and siRNA-based methods) to identify and catalogue missing orthomyxovirus segments. The resulting resource will support broader research on RNA viruses with segmented genomes and help address the problem of incomplete viral genome data.

The lab is primarily computational and studies RNA virus evolution at both short timescales (genomic epidemiology) and long timescales (metatranscriptomic virus discovery). It also includes some limited wet-lab work related to molecular biology tools and pseudovirus assays. The group collaborates with other microbial evolution teams at Vilnius University.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold at least a Master’s degree by June 2026, have programming experience ideally related to bioinformatics, and be comfortable with common command-line tools and sequencing data processing. Experience in molecular evolution, phylogenetics, and sequence data analysis is considered an advantage.

How to apply: email your CV to [email protected] before 2026-06-01. The post does not mention a formal portal or application form.

Institution: Vilnius University, Life Sciences Center, Lithuania.
