About this position

The successful candidate will investigate how blast-prepared steel surfaces influence coating adhesion, using surface spectroscopy, advanced microscopy, machine learning, and chemometrics to understand and predict coating performance. The project is strongly industry-facing and includes access to Sherwin-Williams' R&D team, industrial facilities, proprietary materials, and field performance data.

The studentship is open to Home and International students and is fully funded for three years, including a stipend, tuition fees, and research costs. The full-time stipend is at UKRI rates (£21,805 per year for 2026/27). A part-time Home option is also available over five years. Please note that some additional costs may apply for international applicants, including visa-related expenses and English language test costs if required.

Applicants should normally have a 2:1 degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline, with a strong analytical chemistry background. A Masters with Merit or above is preferred where relevant. Applicants must not already hold a PhD or be enrolled in doctoral study elsewhere, and must be able to study on campus full-time or part-time. IELTS may be required depending on prior qualifications.
