About this position
Fully funded PhD/MS opportunities in Experimental & Computational Geomechanics at South Dakota Mines.
The Subsurface Geomechanics Research Group is advertising 2–3 graduate research assistantships for PhD or MS students in Geological Engineering, with start dates in Spring or Fall 2027. The research spans experimental rock deformation, fracture mechanics, computational geomechanics, AI/ML for geo-energy, and subsurface sensing tool design.
Funding is described as fully funded and includes full tuition support, a monthly stipend, and health insurance, backed by research grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and ARPA-E.
Eligible applicants should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geological, Petroleum, Civil, or Mining Engineering, Geophysics, or a related field, and should show a strong interest in rock physics and geomechanics. English test scores are requested as part of the application package.
