The University of Bergen's Faculty of Law is offering a fully funded PhD position as part of the ENDOTRAIN MSCA Doctoral Network, focusing on patient control of their health data used for research and treatment purposes. This project is embedded in Work Package 4: Ethics and Legal Aspects of AI Tools, and addresses the EU’s initiative to create a unified European market for data. The research will critically examine the compatibility of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) with existing and forthcoming digital regulations, such as the GDPR, and clarify the scope of patient control over health data before and after EHDS adoption. The project aims to propose amendments to EU/EEA legislation and explore national adjustments, culminating in a comprehensive legal analysis of the framework and its impact on digital health approaches.

The successful candidate will join the Research Group for Information and Innovation Law, which specializes in legal issues related to technology, innovation, and information processing, including intellectual property and personal data. The Faculty of Law is home to 15 research groups and three research centres, with strategic priorities in rule of law, international legal cooperation, climate, energy and sustainability law, and law and enabling technologies.

Secondments are planned at UniCA (1 month, ethics by design) and UULM (1 month, interoperability of ENDOTRAIN data with EHDS), providing interdisciplinary and international research experience. The PhD student will be enrolled in the Faculty of Law's doctoral programme, which includes a training component of 30 credits covering legal theory, research methods, and dissemination.

Applicants must hold a Norwegian Master in Law or an equivalent law degree from another jurisdiction, with the degree awarded before employment. Expertise in EU/EEA law is advantageous. Candidates should be motivated for academic research, able to work independently and collaboratively, and interested in interdisciplinary and international projects. Those educated outside Scandinavia must provide certified translations and a Diploma Supplement. The position is open to candidates who have not resided or worked in Norway for more than 12 months in the past 36 months.

The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 568,700–610,400, with potential for higher salary for highly qualified applicants. Additional benefits include enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, generous welfare provisions, and the opportunity to apply for a mobility grant for research abroad.
