About this position

Up to 12 fully funded PhD positions are available at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Cologne, Germany, through the Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research (CGA). The programme is a joint venture involving the University of Cologne Excellence Cluster on Stress Responses in Ageing-Associated Diseases (CECAD), the University Hospital, and the Max Planck Institutes for Biology of Ageing and for Metabolism Research.

The positions are aimed at highly motivated researchers interested in ageing research and related life-science fields such as biology, cell/molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, bioinformatics, biophysics, genetics, medical biology, and translational medicine. The structured PhD training programme starts individually between July 1 and October 1, 2027.

Funding includes an initial contract of at least three years, salary based on the German TV-L E13 scale at 65% or an equivalently remunerated PhD support contract from the Max Planck Society. Additional benefits include dedicated supervision, thesis advisory committees, a comprehensive PhD programme conducted in English, career mentoring, methodology and soft-skills courses, annual conference travel grants, and support for international students with administrative matters.

Applicants should have an MSc or equivalent degree in a relevant field, excellent academic performance in both BSc and MSc studies, a clear interest in the research area, strong motivation for ageing research, and very good English skills (C1 level).
