About this position

Two fully funded PhD positions are available in AI, Robotics, and Autonomous Systems at the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, Tennessee Technological University, USA.

The students will join Dr. Yongyang Liu's research group and work on AI-driven robotics and autonomous systems with a focus on learning-based decision-making, human-centered intelligence, and integrated perception, reasoning, and control.

Research topics include human-robot interaction, human behavior and cognitive modeling, digital twins and simulation, human-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop experimentation, and intelligent mobility and transportation systems.

The group offers access to two full-scale Nissan Leaf-based autonomous research vehicles, four QCar 2 scaled vehicles, a VR-based driving simulator, EEG/ECG and behavioral measurement capabilities, and EV fleet and testing resources.

Applicants should have a background in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Transportation Engineering, or a related field. Strong interest in AI, robotics, and autonomous systems is expected, along with programming experience (e.g., Python or C++) and familiarity with or eagerness to learn machine learning, robotics, or control systems.

To apply, share your information through the group's initial contact form (QR code in the call) with a CV, cover letter, unofficial transcripts, and optionally a research proposal. This initial form does not replace the official university application. Questions can be sent to [email protected].

Start dates are Spring 2027 or Fall 2027.
