About this position

The International Max Planck Research School for Translational Psychiatry (IMPRS-TP) announces its upcoming call for fully funded PhD positions in Neurosciences and Translational Psychiatry research, with a unique residency/PhD track option for medical doctors. Based in Munich, Germany, IMPRS-TP offers an exceptional interdisciplinary environment, bringing together leading scientists from the Max Planck Institutes of Psychiatry and Biological Intelligence, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU), Helmholtz Center Munich, University of Augsburg, and Technical University of Munich (TUM). Collaborations extend to the Munich Medical Research School, Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences, and King’s College London.

PhD students will engage in cutting-edge research spanning molecular, cellular, and systemic psychiatric topics. The program covers a wide array of scientific questions and methods, including molecular genetics in animal models, neuroimaging, computational biology, bioinformatics, epidemiology, and clinical psychiatry. The curriculum is structured with core courses, lecture series, methods workshops, and transferable skills training, addressing topics such as molecular and cellular neuroscience, behavioral assessments, electrophysiology, brain imaging, psychological and clinical measures, statistics, and scientific writing.

IMPRS-TP’s translational approach ensures that doctoral students gain insights into both basic science and clinical aspects of psychiatric diseases. The integrated residency/PhD track is designed for exceptional medical doctors, allowing them to develop clinical skills alongside PhD-level research expertise. The program aims to prepare graduates for successful careers in research, clinical practice, and academia.

Eligibility is open to outstanding candidates from any country who hold a Master of Science (or equivalent) in a relevant field or a Medical Degree. Applications from trainee medical doctors with laboratory experience are especially encouraged. All applications must be submitted via the online application tool on the IMPRS-TP website; submissions by mail or email will not be considered.

The next application window will open in Spring 2026, with a deadline of August 14, 2026. For further details on the program, application process, and FAQs, please visit www.imprs-tp.mpg.de.
