Lancaster University’s Chemistry Department is advertising a fully funded PhD studentship in chemistry, materials science, and battery science. The project is supervised by Dr Michael Mercer and Prof Abbie Trewin and is part of the Faraday Institution PhD Training Programme.

The research focuses on exploiting recent developments in Organically Synthesized Porous Carbon (OSPC) developed by Gavion Ltd. The project will investigate how OSPC performs compared with standard graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries, with particular attention to reduced dendrite formation, higher capacity, and the role of the current collector in improving safety, capacity, and cell lifetime.

Applicants should have a first-class or 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or an aligned engineering field. The post also looks for a strong interest in experimental physical chemistry and battery science, an interest in developing data analysis skills, and good written and oral communication skills.
