About this position

The School of Law and Social Sciences at Aston University is offering a fully funded PhD studentship commencing in October 2026. This opportunity provides a full tuition fee waiver and a stipend at the standard UKRI rate for three years, supporting research in applied social sciences, law, English language and literature, and history. The School is renowned for its vibrant, inclusive, and collaborative research community, producing world-leading research that shapes academic thinking, influences policy, and addresses societal challenges. Research at the School is regionally connected and internationally impactful, with strong links to public and third sector organisations.

Applicants are invited to propose original, innovative, and methodologically rigorous research projects that align with the School’s areas of excellence. Projects may be situated within or across disciplines such as Criminology, English, History, International Relations, Law, Politics, and Sociology. The School hosts specialist research centres including the Aston Institute for Forensic Linguistics, the Aston Centre for Europe, the Centre for Health and Society, the Centre for Migration and Forced Displacement, the Research Centre for the Humanities, and the Research Centre on Radicalisation, Inclusion and Social Equity.

The ideal candidate will have a background in applied linguistics and/or cognitive stylistics. Experience in empirical literary studies or reader response analysis within applied literary linguistic research is particularly valued. Applicants must hold, or expect to achieve, a First or Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree and a Masters degree with Merit or Distinction in relevant subjects. Overseas qualifications are considered if equivalent. Applications must include English language copies of transcripts and certificates, a research statement, personal statement, CV, two academic references, evidence of English language proficiency, and a copy of passport. International students must meet financial requirements for visa, flights, and NHS surcharge.

The position is based at the Aston Campus in Birmingham, UK, and regular in-person visits are expected. Interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams. For further information or informal discussion, contact Dr Katie Tonkiss at [email protected]. For application process queries, contact the Postgraduate Admissions team at [email protected]. The application deadline is May 1, 2026.

Funding covers all tuition fees and includes an annual stipend. Candidates are responsible for relocation and associated costs. For more details, visit the project page or consult the Financial Requirements at Aston University.
