About this position

Fully-funded PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge / Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute in single-cell spatial multi-omics for cancer biology.

The project is supervised by Dr Guiping Wang in the Wang Group, which develops interdisciplinary technologies bridging high-resolution spatial biology, genome-wide discovery, multi-omic sequencing, and quantitative imaging. The lab’s research focus includes extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA), oncogene amplification, intratumour heterogeneity, and therapeutic resistance in aggressive solid cancers.

The PhD will develop and apply cutting-edge single-cell and spatial multi-omic approaches to connect molecular signatures with cancer cell vulnerabilities. The work sits at the interface of molecular biology, genomics, microscopy, method development, and computational analysis, with flexibility to balance these areas according to the student’s strengths and interests.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, an undergraduate or Master’s degree in biophysics, biology, physics, chemistry, bioengineering, physical chemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Helpful experience includes cell culture, nucleic acid work, immunofluorescence, fluorescence microscopy, optics/instrument building, next-generation sequencing, and programming in Python, R, or MATLAB.

Training will be provided for skills you do not yet have, so applicants from either physical sciences/computation or biology are encouraged to apply. What's required

Applicants should hold, or expect to gain, an undergraduate or Master's degree in biophysics, biology, physics, chemistry, bioengineering, physical chemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline. Helpful experience includes mammalian cell culture, nucleic acid work, immunofluorescence staining, fluorescence microscopy, optics and instrument building, next-generation sequencing, Python/R/MATLAB programming, and analysis of image or sequencing data. A previous research project, internship, or Master's thesis in a related area is desirable. The post welcomes both physical-sciences/computational and biology backgrounds; training will be provided in areas not yet covered.
