The research combines controlled laboratory-scale experiments with pilot-scale casting trials, bridging fundamental understanding and industrial relevance. Systematic studies of composition, Fe concentration, and processing parameters will identify optimal conditions for controlling microstructure and defect behaviour. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and a leading aluminium producer, offering opportunities for international collaboration and engagement with real-world industrial processing challenges.

The successful candidate will join the School of Engineering and Informatics at the University of Sussex, benefiting from a vibrant research environment in sustainable materials engineering. Candidates should hold an upper second-class (2:1) undergraduate honours degree or equivalent qualification in a related field such as materials science, engineering, or a similar discipline.
