About this position

Funded research study opportunities are available for Masters and Doctoral students at the University of South Africa (UNISA), Florida Campus, through the Centre for Materials Science in the College of Science, Engineering & Technology.

The call focuses on low-dimensional materials and functional/advanced materials, with research platforms spanning sensors, corrosion inhibitors, superconductors, energy materials, advanced magnetic materials, spintronics, quantum materials, and plasmonic materials. Students may also work in material modelling and characterisation, including surface/interface/transport properties, physical and chemical properties, optical/luminescent/magnetic properties, computer modelling and simulation, quantum chemical/molecular modelling, and theoretical studies using DFT and related semi-empirical methods. An R&D translation component is also mentioned, including technology development and technology demonstrators.

This is a funded opportunity. Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend, tuition coverage, subsistence allowances, travel expenses for university-related activities, medical benefits, and a laptop.

Eligibility highlights: Master’s applicants should have a BSc Honours or equivalent at NQF Level 8 in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Doctoral applicants should have a completed Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Applicants must submit a comprehensive CV with three contactable academic referee email addresses, plus certified copies of transcripts and qualification certificates. International applicants must provide a valid SAQA certificate or proof of SAQA application, depending on level.
