About this position

Funded doctoral and postdoctoral positions are available in the M4C Cluster of Excellence / “Microbes for Climate” at the University of Marburg and partner sites in Marburg/Münster, Germany.

The openings span evolutionary biology and microbial metabolism, including the origin of metabolism, ancient photosynthesis, anaerobe imaging, prebiotic chemistry, CO2 fixation, structural biology, cryo-EM, synthetic biology, multi-omics, and microbial signaling.

Examples of project themes include: reconstructing early metabolisms with structural phylogenetics; building sugar (bis)phosphate libraries to identify enzyme functions in the dark metabolome; evolution of the 3-hydroxypropionate/4-hydroxybutyrate CO2-fixation cycle in archaea; fluorescence imaging in anaerobes; base exchanges in nucleotide cofactors; stress-signaling nucleotides and Coenzyme A biosynthesis; evolution of alternative photosynthesis in cyanobacteria; and ancient two-component signaling controlling CO2 fixation.

Funding is provided for both PhD and postdoc roles, with postdocs listed at 100% and PhD positions at 65% salary levels. The post specifically invites applicants with interests in metabolic evolution, structural biology, or CO2 fixation.

To apply, choose 1–3 projects and submit the requested documents through the University of Marburg job portal. The deadline is 2026-08-20.
