About this position
Funded PhD opportunity at the Earlham Institute, Norwich, United Kingdom. This project is titled From Explanation to Experiment: Agentic AI for Interpreting Nucleotide Foundation Models and sits at the intersection of computer science, bioinformatics, genomics, machine learning, biomedical engineering, and computational mathematics.
The PhD will develop agentic explainable AI methods for DNA and RNA foundation models. The research aims to move beyond model explanations toward biologically grounded, testable hypotheses. Topics include explanation quality, faithfulness to model behaviour, robustness to perturbations, biological plausibility, knowledge-grounded reasoning, ontologies, knowledge graphs, and literature-derived evidence.
The project is based in the AI for Bioscience group and may involve interpreting regulatory sequence features, RNA motifs, gene expression models, and other sequence-to-function prediction tasks. The student will receive interdisciplinary training in frontier AI model training, explainable AI, knowledge graphs, genomics, and open-source scientific software.
Eligibility: at least a UK-equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 or a UK-equivalent Masters degree. Strong AI and/or computational skills are preferred. No prior biological training is required, but enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research is essential. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category.
Funding: fully funded for four years, with tuition fees covered at Home or International rate, a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 in 2026/7), and £5,000 per year for research training.
